Masters of Harmony Update -- Summer 2010

On May 1, 2010, the Masters of Harmony made a long-awaited return to Pasadena’s Ambassador Auditorium for its spring show. In November 1999, before the Masters had become well known, they shared the Ambassador’s acoustically perfect theater with the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra. The Ambassador has been compared favorably to Carnegie Hall and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. To Ambassador audiences, the comparisons literally ring true. This time, the Masters returned as headliners with current International Quartet Champion Crossroads as the featured guest artist.

A week later, the Masters traveled to Pacifica High School in Oxnard, California, to compete in the Southwest Divisional Quartet and Chorus Convention expertly hosted by the Rincon Beach Chapter and emceed by District President Bernard Priceman. The 94 Masters men who took the stage won the contest with a score of 90.0. All of the other competing choruses Rincon Beach, San Fernando Valley, Pasadena and South Bay will join other division qualifiers at the fall contest in Bakersfield this October. Six of the nine quartets in the contest contained members of the Masters, Rincon Beach, or both. The Crush took top honors while On Tap placed second and Top-Notch took fourth.

Congratulations to The Westminster Chorus on its record-setting performance in Philadelphia! The dynamic young men from Westminster made it abundantly clear to Philadelphia audiences why they were named “Choir of the World” in Wales last summer. MOH choreography coach Justin Miller directed them to their stunning victory and in the process became the youngest director to lead a chorus to a Gold Medal.

Masters of Harmony quartets performed well in Philadelphia. Masterpiece finished 6th while The Edge was 14th. Gaining experience needed to move up the ladder at future contests were Catcher Block, 27th, and last year’s Collegiate Quartet Champion The Vagrants, 31st. Other Masters members active in Philadelphia include Doug Maddox, who worked his usual behind-the-scenes technical magic as the Society’s Production Coordinator. Rob Campbell, Craig Ewing and Ken Potter served as contest judges. John Miller, Justin’s father, was named to the Society Board.

Since the last report, Tim Carolan, Willie Daw, John Hickman, Gary Stone, Dan Tucker, and Phil Tucker have become members of the Masters of Harmony.
